The National Football Museum opened on the 6 July 2012 as the world’s finest football museum, set in the heart of Manchester. What better way to get the crowds excited, than to commission Wonder to create a new Museum website and online buzz for the opening.
Following a flurry of ideas to raise the profile of the opening online, we set our hearts and minds on creating a 100-day countdown app, using content generated by audiences on a Facebook app (http://apps.facebook.com/nfm-countdown/) and the Museum’s website. Visitors simply pick a number from 1-100 and use the apps HTML5 canvas to doodle / write a specific fact, stat or story associated with it. Check out some of the entries here: http://www.nationalfootballmuseum.com/join-in/the-countdown/
The creator can share their countdown app entry with their friends and we leave a branded entry on their wall. The app also pulls-in their profile picture into ‘The Crowd’ - a dynamic online display of museum fans. The resultant countdown sits on the museums website and is also available for anyone and everyone to feature on their blog, social media and website via a handy widget (available at http://www.nationalfootballmuseum.com/join-in/the-countdown/).
The new website designed and developed by Wonder, resonates with the National Football Museum’s ethos of celebrating and exploring the people’s game. We have created a contemporary, visitor friendly website reflecting the museum’s vision of creating an exceptional, world-class visitor experience both in the Museum and online. Our UI design approach has been to focus on doing what Wonder does best – bold, simple beauty, which inspires target audiences…in this case local, national and international football fans, cultural tourists and families.
The Phase 1 website includes:
- dynamic, modern-take on a shop window homepage, providing an at-a-glance view of the latest Museum news, views and what’s on, set against a dramatic back-drop of powerful full-screen images,
- custom built ‘What’s On’ for the museum to dynamically feature exhibitions, interactives and events (currently featuring a sample of content which will be developed over the coming months),
- rich displays of online content to explore Collections (including the FIFA collection) and the Hall of Fame, celebrating the greatest players, managers and teams of all time in British football,
- presentation of a new hospitality, hire, corporate membership and sponsorship offer.
“Wonder Associates have been a pleasure to work with on our new website. Their creativity, enthusiasm, professionalism, knowledge of their subject matter and project management skills know no bounds! They have listened to our suggestions and taken on board any concerns, whilst always pushing us to go that one step further to achieve a website that we can truly be proud of and, importantly, that our users will engage with. The journey of working with Wonder from beginning to end has been a delight and we look forward to continuing to work with them on future digital projects.” Phillippa Duxbury, Marketing Manager, National Football Museum
